Rattan and ramie weaving are important traditional crafts of the Atayal people. Datong Township Atayal Aborigine Museum and Nan’ao Atayal Culture Museum both collect precious relics of rattan and ramie weaving.
In traditional Atayal society, men and women had clear division of work. Rattan weaving was quite heavy-duty, and was carried out by men; the craft of ramie weaving required skillful hands and delicate weaving technique, and was mainly the job of women.
